And this is coming from a self-proclaimed shopaholic. Well, I’ve calmed down a lot within the last year or so since becoming a full-time entrepreneur. Instead of buying a new pair of shoes, I invest in my business. Talk about self-control (*pats self on the back*)!

Today I want to talk about a misconception some brides have while planning their wedding and that’s that putting together their wedding registry is going to be fun. Well, let me be the first one to break it to you; it’s not that fun. At least that was my experience and a statement I hear from some of my brides as well.
Piecing together your registry is not like shopping for a new outfit or new furniture for your home. It’s actually a pretty tedious and time-consuming process. When my now husband and I went to our first department store, I was so excited (whooo!) especially after they give you that gun scanner thing. But after about 2 hours, I was so exhausted; I just wanted to take a nap. One of the reasons I think it took so long was because the store appointed to us a “wedding registry expert” to “help” us. She made us stop at every nook and cranny of that store. I promise I could have probably worked at that store after that day and answered any product questions you had. That’s how intimate we got with the products. After that experience, we had the bright idea to add on two additional stores by registering online instead of in the store (just to give our guests different options and price points) and it was still overwhelming and not much fun.
You may be thinking, “When should I register for my wedding?” I always advise my BE Brides to register before we mail out their save the dates (about 4-6 months before the wedding). Many guests will want to take a look at your registry and see what’s in it and have it mailed to you before the wedding day. This gives your guests enough time to look through everything in order to make a decision.
Registering for wedding gifts is not mandatory but it’s more of a norm in this day and age. What are some alternatives to traditional registries you ask? Well here are a couple of ideas.
Asking guests to donate to a charitable foundation in your honor in lieu of a gift
A honeymoon fund for you and your husband/wife to be
Not asking for any gifts at all
And if you’re still interested in putting together your registry but just want to have a bit more fun doing it, Here Are Some Tips to Consider Before Setting Up Your Wedding Registry:
Pick only 1 – 2 (max) stores – I suggest picking stores and items at different price points and stores that are easily accessible to your guests given where most of your guests live. Many people may want to go to an actual store to take a look at the item in person before buying it.
Take inventory on what you two already have and what you can buy yourself so you only shop for the essentials – Do you really need another/new toaster? Or do you really need someone to buy you a set of new utensils retailing at $50? Probably not, focus on what you really want and need and more importantly, what you will actually use after the wedding.
If you can, do your registry online – In many instances, the department stores have more options online that can’t be found in every store, which gives your guests more options to choose from.
If you’re going into the store, wear comfortable shoes, eat a filling meal beforehand and opt out of being helped my a store associate – If you’ve done your homework beforehand, you should have a good idea of what exactly you want to register for.
Don’t do it by yourself – Go with your significant other or your best friend. I’m sure you’ll have a lot more fun if you’re with someone you love.
If it gets boring or you’re not having fun anymore…leave! – As your scanning your items, they are being saved into your online registry automatically so you don’t have to do it all at once. You can finish up online or come back another time.
