Timing Your Traditional and White Wedding | Nigerian Wedding Planner

Planning and executing one wedding is a lot of work, but you’re having TWO celebrations? You must be kicking yourself by now! Twice the decisions, double the planning. Well, I’m here to help!

If you’ve decided to have a traditional Nigerian wedding as well as a “white wedding” day, one of the initial questions you may have asked is “should the two days be right after one another (e.g. traditional wedding on Friday and white wedding on Saturday) or should the celebrations be weeks or even months apart from one another?”

When I work with my Nigerian clients, this is one of the first questions I ask before we start diving into the planning process. There are a lot of pros and cons with both scenarios that you may not have considered when thinking about your ideal wedding dates.

In this article, I’ll point out the potential advantages and disadvantages of both scenarios in hopes of giving you the information you need to make a decision that works the best for you.

Here are the pros and cons of having both of your celebrations during the same weekend:

Pros

  1. Guests who live out of town can attend and participate in both weddings without having to invest in traveling twice

  2. Guests who travel from out of the country do not have to file for their visa applications twice in the rare occasion their visas are only granted for a small duration of time

  3. You may be able to get a more favorable rate from your venue if you decide to use the same location for both weddings

  4. Many rental companies have a 3 day rental period so you will save money using certain rentals and décor for both days (e.g. upgraded chairs if your venue does not already provide this)

  5. Have you ever wanted an entire wedding weekend experience filled with multiple days of events? Having both weddings in one weekend will help with this goal and create a strong energy throughout the entire weekend. You can add in other events during the weekend such as a brunch on Sunday

Cons

  1. Two back-to-back nights of celebrating can be exhausting. Not only for your guests, but also for the friends and family you have selected for your wedding party

  2. If bad weather strikes for the weekend, it may affect both celebrations

  3. Out of town guests who would like to attend both weddings may have to take a day off of work because your traditional wedding is on a Friday

Now let’s discuss the pros and cons of having both of your celebrations on different weekends:

Pros

  1. If you and your fiancés families are from different states/countries, you can choose to have each celebration in different locations

  2. You’ll be able to have a little break in wedding planning depending on how far apart the two dates are

  3. You will not be exhausted at the end of the weekend since you will only have one long day versus two

Cons

  1. You will have to take off work twice leading up to both weddings weekends for final preparations and to just relax

  2. Your overall budget will be higher because you will not take advantage of any cost savings of using the same vendors/venue/rentals for two consecutive days

  3. Out of town guests will pick just one celebration to attend to cut down on the investment in traveling

  4. If your weddings are in two different cities, you’ll be dealing with completely different vendors and it could get overwhelming

Whether you choose to have both of your weddings on the same weekend or separate weekends, I would by no means have both celebrations on the same day. I’ve had some people as me this question and from a logistic prospective, it would not work.
